RESUMO

A feeding therapy developed in Brazil integrates aspects from diverse approaches and has increasingly been acknowledged as an adjunctive approach for addressing childhood feeding difficulties. In children, problems with eating are a common issue that affects their nutritional well-being, health, and overall quality of life, and can greatly hinder their social, emotional, and physical growth. In the realm of pediatrics, feeding therapy uses food and nutritional education, interactive games, and activities tailored to age groups and individualized treatment plans. The primary objective is to transform mealtime experiences and gradually foster children's acceptance of previously rejected foods. However, this treatment approach is new and recent in Brazil and lacks studies that explore and elucidate the topic. Therefore, this report aims to describe the follow-up and effects of feeding therapy in a 3-y and 8-mo-old neurotypical male patient with feeding difficulties who underwent feeding therapy conducted by a dietitian over a period of 19 wk. The feeding therapy consisted of 45-min sessions once a week in which food and nutrition education activities, games, and interactive activities, personalized according to the treatment plan, were carried out. The effects of feeding therapy were evaluated according to the patient's feeding progression throughout the sessions and their stepwise progress in the eating hierarchy. Based on our observations, the findings of this study suggest that feeding therapy practiced in Brazil can be a viable treatment approach for addressing feeding difficulties within this population. The feeding therapy originated in Brazil stands out from traditional nutritional care with its nurturing and compassionate approach that prioritizes respect for the child.

RESUMO

Introduction: A prognostic model to predict liver severity in people with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is very important, but the accuracy of the most commonly used tools is not yet well established. Objective: The meta-analysis aimed to assess the accuracy of different prognostic serological biomarkers in predicting liver fibrosis severity in people with MASLD. Methods: Adults ≥18 years of age with MASLD were included, with the following: liver biopsy and aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio (APRI), fibrosis index-4 (FIB-4), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score (NFS), body mass index, aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ratio, diabetes score (BARD score), FibroMeter, FibroTest, enhanced liver fibrosis (ELF), Forns score, and Hepascore. Meta-analyses were performed using a random effects model based on the DerSimonian and Laird methods. The study's risk of bias was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2. Results: In total, 138 articles were included, of which 86 studies with 46,514 participants met the criteria for the meta-analysis. The results for the summary area under the receiver operating characteristic (sAUROC) curve, according to the prognostic models, were as follows: APRI: advanced fibrosis (AF): 0.78, any fibrosis (AnF): 0.76, significant fibrosis (SF): 0.76, cirrhosis: 0.72; FIB-4: cirrhosis: 0.83, AF: 0.81, AnF: 0.77, SF: 0.75; NFS: SF: 0.81, AF: 0.81, AnF: 0.71, cirrhosis: 0.69; BARD score: SF: 0.77, AF: 0.73; FibroMeter: SF: 0.88, AF: 0.84; FibroTest: SF: 0.86, AF: 0.78; and ELF: AF: 0.87. Conclusion: The results of this meta-analysis suggest that, when comparing the scores of serological biomarkers with liver biopsies, the following models showed better diagnostic accuracy in predicting liver fibrosis severity in people with MASLD: FIB-4 for any fibrosis, FibroMeter for significant fibrosis, ELF for advanced fibrosis, and FIB-4 for cirrhosis.Clinical trial registration: [https://clinicaltrials.gov/], identifier [CRD 42020180525].

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The increase in dengue cases can be attributed to social, demographic, environmental changes, or community-driven factors. In this regard, different strategies have been established in health education, using educational interventions as necessary tools for the reduction of the disease with the aim of reinforcing and stimulating the prevention and control of dengue. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a nursing educational intervention for dengue control. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial will be conducted with adults living in rural areas and participating in health promotion and disease prevention programs. We will enroll 116 adults. Adults will be randomized 1:1, with 58 adults assigned to the educational intervention group and 58 to the usual care group. Participants will receive 4 sessions over the course of a month, 1 week apart, and will be followed up for 1 month after the end of the educational intervention. Nursing Outcome Classification labels will be used to measure the outcomes: risk control (1902) and participation in health care decisions (1606). RESULTS: The participants in the intervention group are expected to achieve better dengue control behaviors than those in the usual care group. CONCLUSIONS: Risk factors are fostered by the community, largely caused by artificial reservoirs or unprotected tanks in homes; also, the lack of information hinders the identification of symptomatology and the poor implementation of effective measures, and the development of standardized educational strategies can contribute to efficient and cost-effective control of the disease. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Arterial hypertension is the greatest cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with high blood pressure (HBP) among adolescents. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Pelotas 2004 Birth Cohort included 4231 newborns from hospital births in Pelotas, Brazil. A digital automatic OMRON sphygmomanometer (model HEM 742) was used to measure blood pressure on 3 occasions (at 6, 11, and 15 years of age). Those with blood pressure ≥95th percentile for age, height, and sex on each of the 3 occasions were considered as presenting HBP. Independent variables included family (income and history of arterial hypertension), maternal (schooling, age, pregestational body mass index, and smoking during pregnancy), and adolescent characteristics at birth (sex, skin color, gestational age, intrauterine growth, and systolic and diastolic genetic factors), and at 15 years (sleep, physical activity, sodium intake, screen time, work, body mass index, fat mass index, fat-free mass index, growth pattern, and puberty status). The prevalence of HBP (95% CI) was calculated. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) stratified by sex were obtained by logistic regression. A total of 1417 adolescents with complete information on blood pressure on the 3 occasions were analyzed. The prevalence of HBP was 3.2% (95% CI, 1.9%-4.5%) in female adolescents and 4.3% (95% CI, 2.8%-5.8%) in male adolescents. Female adolescents with a family history of arterial hypertension had a 3 times higher chance of HBP than their counterparts (OR, 3.1 [95% CI, 1.26-7.54]). In male adolescents, excessive maternal pregestational weight was associated with a 2.3-fold increase in the chance of HBP. In both sexes, excessive adolescent weight was associated with HBP (ORs, 3.5 and 5.0, for female and male adolescents, respectively). A higher fat mass index and fat-free mass index in female (ORs, 1.4 and 1.2, respectively) and male adolescents (ORs, 2.5 and 3.0, respectively) increased the chance of HBP. Among male adolescents, the chance of HBP was higher among those with rapid weight gain between 48 months and 6 years and between 6 and 11 years and rapid height gain between 6 and 11 years. CONCLUSIONS: Higher fat mass in both sexes and rapid weight gain in male adolescents are risk factors for HBP in adolescents aged 15 years, potentially amenable to prevention.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is an effective intervention that causes a series of metabolic changes related to inflammatory processes; however, the variation of biomarkers related to these processes is not entirely understood. Our objective was to investigate the variation of modulation and expression of biomarkers associated with inflammation in patients who underwent bariatric surgery. METHODS: We searched the MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE (via Elsevier), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (via virtual health library), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (via EBSCO), Web of Science core collection, and Scopus (via Elsevier) databases, and the gray literature was examined from inception to January 2022. Three pairs of reviewers performed data screening, extraction, and quality assessment independently. Meta-analysis with random effects models was used for general, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses. The I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity between studies. RESULTS: In total, 96 articles were included in this systematic review; of these, 87 studies met the criteria for the meta-analysis, involving 3,533 participants. Five biomarkers were included in the meta-analysis (tumor necrosis factor alpha; interleukin 6; leptin; interleukin 1 beta, and lipopolysaccharides). Only leptin showed a significant decrease in the first month after surgery (mean difference -20.71; [95% confidence interval: -28.10 to -13.32, P < .0001; I2 = 66.7%), with moderate heterogeneity. The 12 months after surgery showed a significant decrease in tumor necrosis factor alpha (mean difference -0.89; [95% confidence interval: -1.37 to -0.42], P = .0002; I2 = 94.7%), interleukin 6 (mean difference -1.62; [95% confidence interval: -1.95 to -1.29], P < .0001; I2 = 94.9%), leptin (mean difference -28.63; [95% confidence interval: -34.02 to -23.25], P < .0001; I2 = 92.7%), and interleukin 1 beta (mean difference -2.46; [95% confidence interval: -4.23 to -0.68], P = .006; I2 = 98.3%), all with high heterogeneity. The type of surgery did not show significant differences for the biomarkers at the first month and 12 months, and the results have not changed with high-quality studies. In the 12-month measurement, variations in tumor necrosis factor alpha and leptin were associated with body mass index. CONCLUSION: The findings of this meta-analysis suggest that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy bariatric surgeries are associated with a significant reduction in leptin at 1 month after bariatric surgical intervention and tumor necrosis factor alpha, leptin, and interleukin 1 beta after 12 months.

RESUMO

Introduction: assessing the ability to cope with regret can contribute to support strategies for health professionals. However, in Brazil only few instruments evaluate this ability in general. Objective: this study aimed was to adapt and validate the Regret Coping Scale for Healthcare Professionals (RCS-HCP) to Brazilian Portuguese . Methods: the instruments were translated, and the psychometric properties evaluated for validity and reliability. Three hundred and forty-one professionals participated, with an average age of 38.6 ± 9.2, and 87 participated in a retest survey 30 days later. Results: exploratory factor analysis showed adequacy of the structure (KMO = 0.786) composed of three factors. In the confirmation, the performance was close to acceptable. Reliability was good for the maladaptive strategies (α = 0.834) and adequate for the problem-focused initiatives (α = 0.717), but slightly too low for adaptive strategies (α = 0.595). Test- retest showed lower than expected values, with a Spearman- Brown coefficient of 0.703. Conclusion: the RCS-HCP scale showed satisfactory performance in relation to the properties evaluated.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to investigate whether phase angle (PhA) of bioelectrical impedance is associated with inflammatory markers in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). METHODS: A search was performed in the following databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Latin American Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science and Scopus; and in the gray literature up to January 2022. Studies with individuals with CVDs were included, to evaluate the association between PhA and the inflammatory markers interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, IL-18, IL-1ß, IL-33, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, C-reactive protein (CRP), toll-like receptor (TLR) 2, TLR 4, nuclear factor κB, pathogen-associated molecular pattern molecules, lipopolysaccharides, interferon-γ-inducing factor, and JAK STAT. RESULTS: We identified 755 articles and, after an eligibility analysis, 5 studies were included. The inflammatory markers investigated in the studies were CRP, TNF-α, and IL-33. In patients with CVDs, PhA was negatively associated with CRP and TNF-α in 80% and 100% of the studies, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The present results suggested that PhA is inversely associated with inflammatory markers in individuals with CVDs, and its clinical use is encouraged for better therapeutic planning.

RESUMO

Background: As compared to full-term infants (39-41 weeks of gestation), early-term infants (37-38 wk) are at increased risk of adverse outcomes, including shorter exclusive breastfeeding (EB) duration and continued breastfeeding. Objectives: To compare early-term with full- and late-term infants regarding the prevalence of EB at 3 mo and any breastfeeding at 12 mo. Methods: Data sets from two population-based birth cohorts conducted in the city of Pelotas, Brazil, were combined. Only term infants (37 0/7 through 41 6/7 weeks of gestation) were included in the analyses. Early-term infants (37 0/7 through 38 6/7 wk) were compared to the remaining term infants (39 0/7 through 41 6/7 wk). Information on breastfeeding was gathered through maternal interviews at the 3-mo and 12-mo follow-ups. The prevalence of EB at 3 mo and any breastfeeding at 12 mo with 95% CIs were calculated. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) were obtained through Poisson regression. Results: A total of 6395 infants with information on gestational age and EB at 3 mo and 6401 infants with information on gestational age and any breastfeeding at 12 mo were analyzed. There was no difference between early-term infants and the remaining term infants regarding the prevalence of EB at 3 mo (29.2% and 27.9%, respectively) (P = 0.248). Prevalence of any breastfeeding at 12 mo was lower in early-term infants than among those born between 39 0/7 and 41 6/7 weeks of gestation (38.2% compared with 42.4%) (P = 0.001). In the adjusted analysis, the PR for any breastfeeding at 12 mo was 15% lower in the early-term group than in the remaining term infants (PR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.76-0.95) (P = 0.004). Conclusions: The prevalence of EB at 3 mo was similar among term infants. Nonetheless, in comparison with the remaining infants born at term, early-term infants were at increased risk of having been weaned before reaching 12 mo of age. Curr Dev Nutr 2023;xx:xx.

RESUMO

The effects of environmental pollution are associated with higher rates of mortality, morbidity, and years of life lost. It is known that these produce alterations in the human body, including changes in body composition. Research has focused on the association between contaminants and BMI through cross-sectional studies. The objective of this study was to synthesize the evidence for the association of pollutants on different measures of body composition. The PECOS strategy was defined, in which "P": participants of any age, sex, or ethnicity, "E": a higher level of environmental pollution, "C": a lower level of environmental pollution, "O": body composition measurements and "S": longitudinal studies. Studies from the following databases were included: MEDLINE, EMBASE, SciELO, LILACS, Scopus, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and gray literature from inception to January 2023.3069 studies were identified, 18 were included in the systematic review, and 13 in the meta-analysis. These studies included 8.563 people, 47 environmental contaminants, and 16 measures of body composition. The meta-analysis by subgroup found that the association between dioxins, furans, PCBs, and waist circumference was ß = 1.0 (95% CI: 0.85 to 1.16; I2: 95%), and the sum of four skinfolds ß = 1.02 (95% CI: 0.88 to 1.16; I2: 24%). The association between pesticides and waist circumference was ß = 1.00 (95% CI: 0.68 to 1.32; I2: 98%), and the fat mass was ß = 0.99 (95% CI: 0.17 to 1.81; I2: 94%). Pollutants, especially endocrine-disrupting chemicals, among which dioxins, furans, PCBs, and pesticides, are associated with changes in body composition, mainly with waist circumference and the sum of four skinfolds.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Encephalitis is an inflammation of the cerebral parenchyma manifested by acute symptoms such as fever, headaches, and other neurological disorders. Its etiology is mostly viral, with herpes simplex virus being a frequent etiological agent in children. The development of neurological sequelae is a serious outcome associated with this infection. OBJECTIVE: To assess the general prevalence and types of neurological sequelae in children after a case of acute viral encephalitis caused by HSV. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was developed following the PRISMA guidelines. The literature search was carried out in the MEDLINE, Embase, SciELO, LILACS, Cochrane, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases. Studies were included of children with confirmed HSV infection and that presented a description of neurological sequelae associated with that infection. For the meta-analysis of general prevalence and of the types of neurological sequelae a random effects model was used. RESULTS: Of the 2827 articles chosen in the initial search, nine studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The general prevalence of neurological sequelae was 50.7% (95% CI 39.2-62.2). The most frequent sequelae were related to mental disability, with a 42.1% prevalence (95% CI 30-55.2); on the other hand, the least frequent sequelae were those related with visual impairment, with a 5.9% prevalence (95% CI 2.2-14.6). The included studies presented regular quality and substantial heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: Even with antiviral therapy, half of patients will develop some type of disability.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of and factors associated with the lifetime medical diagnosis of depression in Brazil. DESIGN: Population-based, cross-sectional study. SETTING: Analysis of data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. PARTICIPANTS: 90 846 individuals aged ≥15 years were included. OUTCOME MEASURE: The self-reported medical diagnosis of depression at some point in one's life was the main outcome. Prevalence ratios (PRs) with 95% CIs were calculated by Poisson regression with robust variance. The independent variables included the geographical area of residence, sociodemographic characteristics, current smoking status, alcohol abuse, daily screen time, and the presence of physical disorders and mental health comorbidities. RESULTS: The self-reported lifetime prevalence of medical diagnosis of depression was 9.9% (95% CI 9.5% to 10.2%). The probability of having received a medical diagnosis of depression was higher among urban residents (PR 1.23; 95% CI 1.12 to 1.35); females (2.75; 2.52 to 2.99); those aged 20-29 years (1.17; 0.91 to 1.51), 30-39 years (1.73; 1.36 to 2.19), 40-49 years (2.30; 1.81 to 2.91), 50-59 years (2.32; 1.84 to 2.93) and 60-69 years (2.27; 1.78 to 2.90) compared with those under 20 years; white-skinned people (0.69 (0.61 to 0.78) for black-skinned people and 0.74 (0.69 to 0.80) for indigenous, yellow and brown-skinned people compared with white-skinned people); those with fewer years of education (1.33(1.12 to 1.58) among those with 9-11 years, 1.14 (0.96 to 1.34) among those with 1-8 years and 1.29 (1.11 to 1.50) among those with 0 years compared with those with ≥12 years of education); those who were separated/divorced (1.43; 1.29 to 1.59), widowed (1.06; 0.95 to 1.19) and single (1.01; 0.93 to 1.10) compared with married people; smokers (1.26; 1.14 to 1.38); heavy screen users (1.31; 1.16 to 1.48) compared with those whose usage was <6 hours/day; those with a medical diagnosis of a physical disorder (1.80; 1.67 to 1.97); and individuals with a medical diagnosis of a mental health comorbidity (5.05; 4.68 to 5.46). CONCLUSION: This nationwide population-based study of self-reported lifetime medical diagnosis of depression in Brazil showed that the prevalence was almost 10%. Considering the current Brazilian population, this prevalence corresponds to more than 2 million people who have been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives.

RESUMO

There is already knowledge of the extensive risk factors for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and recent studies suggest that environmental pollution may contribute to an increase in the incidence of the disorder. The aim of our study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the risk of ADHD in people younger than 18 years old after exposure to environmental pollution. We searched the MEDLINE, Embase, SciELO, CINAHL, LILACS, Cochrane Central, and Web of Science databases and investigated the grey literature from inception until May 31, 2021. All cohort studies that provided data on exposure to environmental pollutants and ADHD in children and adolescents aged from zero to 18 years old were included. Two reviewers independently selected the studies and applied the quality criteria. If there was a divergence, a third reviewer contributed to the final decision. For the meta-analysis, risk ratios and their confidence intervals were calculated with the MetaXL 5.3 program, using the random effects model. In total, 21 articles were included in this systematic review, and 18 studies met the criteria for the meta-analysis, involving 134,619 participants. The meta-analysis suggested that children exposed to higher levels of heavy metal (RR: 2.41, 95% CI: 1.49-3.90), with low heterogeneity (I2 = 39%), and lead (RR: 2.37, 95% CI: 1.28-4.40), with moderate heterogeneity (I2 = 54%), are at greater risk of developing ADHD than those exposed to lower levels. This meta-analysis suggests that children exposed to higher levels of lead and heavy metal pollution are at greater risk of developing ADHD than those exposed to lower levels.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Identifying which types of athletes have increased injury risk (ie, predictive risk factors) should help develop cost-effective selective injury prevention strategies. Our objective was to compare a theoretical injury risk classification system developed by coaches and rehabilitation therapists, with observed injury rates in human circus acts across dimensions of physical stressors, acrobatic complexity, qualifications, and residual risks. DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiological study. SETTING: professional circus company. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Human circus artists performing in routine roles between 2007 and 2017. ASSESSMENT OF RISK FACTORS: Characteristics of circus acts categorized according to 4 different dimensions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Medical attention injury rates (injury requiring a visit to the therapist), time-loss injury rates (TL-1; injury resulting in at least one missed performance), and time-loss 15 injury rates (TL-15; injury resulting in at least 15 missed performances). RESULTS: Among 962 artists with 1 373 572 performances, 89.4% (860/962) incurred at least one medical attention injury, 74.2% (714/962) incurred at least one TL-1 injury, and 50.8% (489/962) incurred at least one TL-15 injury. There were important inconsistencies between theoretical and observed injury risk patterns in each of the 4 dimensions for all injury definitions (medical attention, TL-1, and TL-15). CONCLUSIONS: Although theoretical classifications are the only option when no data are available, observed risk patterns based on injury surveillance programs can help identify artists who have a high (or low) theoretical risk but are nonetheless actually at low (or high) risk of injury, given their current roles. This will help develop more cost-effective selective injury prevention programs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to estimate the percentage distribution of body composition parameters for healthy people at different ages from the assessment of electrical bioimpedance. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of healthy Brazilian aged 5 years and older. Were evaluated: total body fat; percent body fat; fat-free mass; percent lean mass; fat mass index; and fat-free mass index. RESULTS: Of 1240 participants, with a median age of 27.0 years, 52.5% were female, and 73.7% were Caucasian. Most of the body composition variables were associated with age. The fat-free mass increased from youth to adult and decreased in the elderly in both sexes, with higher values in males than in females. In males, the percentage of lean mass has higher values in adolescence compared to childhood, and in adults compared to the elderly, when analyzed from the 50th percentile. In women, fat-free mass compared to adulthood, values were higher in childhood and lower in older ages. CONCLUSIONS: The study is the first to describe the Brazilian reference values for most clinical parameters of bioimpedance in percentiles stratified by different life cycles and sex. These findings can be very useful in clinical practice for health promotion and monitoring the nutritional status of the individual.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Various well-validated interview and self-report instruments are available to assess eating disorder symptomatology. However, most psychometric studies have been conducted in high-income countries. The aim of the present study was to systematically review the available psychometric studies conducted in low- and middle-income countries on well-known measures for assessing eating disorder symptoms. METHODS: Psychometric studies with the following instruments were included: the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT), and the Children's Eating Attitudes Test (ChEAT). Searches were conducted on August 30, 2021, in the following databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and CABI. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN). The studies were considered to have conducted the minimum psychometric evaluation if they assessed at least the three types of validity (content, criteria, and construct) or diagnostic performance. The psychometric properties were also evaluated considering the cut-off points described in the literature for each of the analysis methods used to evaluate validity and reliability and two reviewers independently selected the studies and evaluated the quality criteria. RESULTS: A total of 28 studies were included. The studies were conducted in 13 countries (10 middle income and 3 low income). The instruments that were most used in the studies were the EAT and EDE-Q. According to the overall COSMIN assessment, in most (57%) of the studies the psychometric properties assessed were not described. Forty-three percent of the studies conducted the minimum psychometric evaluation. However, according to the described cut-off points, the results for the psychometric properties assessed showed, in general, acceptable validity and reliability. CONCLUSION: The results of this review suggest a lack of studies with the recommended psychometric properties in low- and middle-income countries on these commonly used instruments. With the steady increase in the prevalence of eating disorders globally, psychometric investigations of instruments for measuring eating disorder symptoms in these countries should be encouraged to promote their early detection and treatment.

The prevalence of eating disorders has increased worldwide. Various instruments are available to assess eating disorder symptomatology, but most psychometric studies have been conducted in high-income countries. The current study aimed to systematically review studies from low- and middle-income countries that have examined the psychometric properties of commonly used measures for assessing eating disorder symptoms. The findings of this study suggest a lack of research in low- and middle-income countries on the psychometric properties of commonly used eating disorder instruments. To promote the early detection and treatment of eating disorder symptoms, instruments with adequate psychometric properties must be available worldwide.

RESUMO

Objectives: The present study was designed to estimate phase angle percentile curves for a broad age range of healthy individuals. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of healthy Brazilian individuals aged five to 80. InBodyS10 was used to assess phase angle. Reference curves were stratified by sex and estimated using Generalized additive models for location, scale, and shape as a continuous function of age. The phase angle determinants analyzed were physical activity, age, BMI, and SES variables. Results: Data were analyzed from 2,146 individuals, 1,189 (55.2%) of whom were female. In both sexes, the phase angles showed a similar pattern (an increasing trend from childhood to the teenage phase, followed by stabilization during adult ages and a decrease in old adults). In female, the relationship between phase angle and age were associated with BMI and family income. In the male, the relationship between phase angle and age were associated with skin color and family income. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, it is the first attempt to apply the GAMLSS technique to estimate phase angle percentiles in a healthy population covering most of the life cycle. We also showed that there are different phase angle determinants according to sex.

RESUMO

Peripheral nerve damage is an important cause of seeking medical attention. It occurs when the continuity of structures is interrupted and the propagation of nervous impulses is blocked, affecting the functional capacity of individuals. To assess the effects of the immunosuppressants tacrolimus and cyclosporine on the regeneration of peripheral nerves, a systematic review of the literature was carried out. The articles included were published until September 2018 and proposed to evaluate the effects of the immunosuppressants tacrolimus and cyclosporine on nerve regeneration and neuroprotection, available in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Oxford Pain Relief Database, and LILACS databases. The research analysed a total of 56 articles, of which 22 were included in the meta-analysis. Statistical analysis suggests the protective effect of tacrolimus in the regeneration of the number of myelinated axons (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.93-2.39; p < 0.01); however, such effect was not observed in relation to cyclosporine (95%CI: - 0.38-1.18; p = 0.08) It also suggests that there is a significant relationship between the use of tacrolimus and myelin thickness (95%CI= 2.00-5.71; p < 0. 01). The use of immunosuppressants in the regeneration of peripheral nerve damage promotes an increase in the number of myelinated axons in general, regardless of the administered dose. In addition, it ensures greater myelin thickness, muscle weight and recovery of the sciatic functional index. However, heterogeneity was high in most analyses performed.

RESUMO

The phase angle of bioimpedance is an important prognostic tool in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between phase angle and cardiovascular diseases. Electronic searches were carried out on MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, SCIELO, LILACS, CINAHL, Scopus, and the Web of Science. The PECO was "P" adults over 18 years of age, "E" the presence of cardiovascular disease, "C" absence of cardiovascular disease, and "O" phase angle values. The phase-angle means difference (MD) was analyzed separately by sex. Subgroup metanalysis with age, body mass index, and heart failure disease and meta-regressions were analyzed with random-effects models. Sensitivity analysis was performed considering only studies with high quality. The heterogeneity among studies was assessed using the Q-Cochran test and I² statistics. Four-hundred-thirty-nine articles were identified, and 22 studies were included in this systematic review, totaling 10.010 participants. Eight studies met the criteria for the meta-analysis, involving 2164 participants. The phase angle (PA) was measured at 50 kHz frequency in all studies. Individuals with cardiovascular disease had a smaller PA compared to the control group, for both males (MD -0.70; 95% CI -1.01 to -0.39) and females (MD -0.76; 95% CI -1.39 to -0.13). In the sensitivity analysis, in men, the quality of studies (P < 0.01), and in women, heart failure (P < 0.01) was significantly different between groups. The values of the phase angle were lower in individuals with cardiovascular disease than in control subjects. This result reinforces the importance of this tool in clinical practice, highlighting its potential to assess health status. Registration: The systematic review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database as CRD42020164178.
